Det berättas att detta en gång skedde under en scendemonstration då publiken och hans subjekt förgäves väntade på att han skulle göra något. Men ingenting hände. Trots detta föll hans klient till allas häpnad plötsligt in i ett hypnotiskt tillstånd. Efteråt förklarade Erickson att det var för att han inte gjorde något som hans klient blev tvungen att själv försätta sig i hypnos.
